Booking choice: The Forum and Palatine tour, from $53 per person. Check dates Tour details
Rome's archaeological park spent 2026 tightening its ticket system. Names on every ticket. ID at every gate. One office for the walk-up Colosseum ticket, and almost no way to change a name once you have paid.
The target was touts and bulk resellers, not you. The rules still catch ordinary visitors: the family that typed a child's name wrong, the friend who takes over a ticket at the last minute. This post covers what applies to a Forum visit this autumn and winter, and what changes when a tour operator buys the tickets for you.
The quick answer
Every ticket is issued in the visitor's name, and you show ID with it at the gate. For visits from 9 May 2026 a name can be changed once, by midnight on the seventh day before, and only for a typo, a wrong fare inside the same order or a serious documented reason. Since 4 May the 24h Colosseum, Forum and Palatine ticket is sold in person only at the Piazza del Colosseo office. Online sales open 30 days ahead, with a €2 fee per ticket.
Do you need ID to enter the Roman Forum in 2026?
Yes. Tickets are issued in the holder's name, and the Park asks every visitor to keep an identity document visible next to the ticket at the entrances, Forum gates included.
The notice sits on the official opening times and tickets page: tickets are nominative, and an ID document must be kept visible at the entrances with the ticket. That applies at Largo della Salara Vecchia, at the Arch of Titus and at Via di San Gregorio, not only at the Colosseum. Children get named tickets too, free ones included.
Bring the original passport or ID card. We would not gamble a day in Rome on a photo of it. After the ticket check comes an airport-style security scan at every entrance, so budget ten minutes even with a ticket in hand.
The ordinary Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket (€18) gives one entry to the Forum within 24 hours before or after your timed Colosseum slot. The same name has to match at both gates. Our Roman Forum ticket guide explains which ticket fits which plan.
| Rule | Since | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Named tickets, ID visible at the gate | In force now | The name must match your passport or ID card |
| 24h ticket sold in person only at Piazza del Colosseo | 4 May 2026 | No walk-up Colosseum tickets at the Forum gates |
| Salara Vecchia and Foro Romano 1 sell only the Forum Pass SUPER | 4 May 2026 | Forum-first visitors can still buy on the spot |
| Name change once, by midnight 7 days before, 3 reasons only | Visits from 9 May 2026 | No swapping tickets between friends |
| Online sales open 30 days before the visit | In force now | Popular slots go on day one |
| €2 online booking fee per ticket | In force now | An €18 ticket costs €20 online |
| Night tours: no name change after purchase | 2026 season | Check spelling before you pay |

Can you change the name on a Colosseum or Forum ticket?
Only once, only until midnight on the seventh day before the visit, and only for three reasons: an obvious typo, the wrong fare type inside the same purchase, or a serious documented reason that stops the visit.
That is the rule for visit dates from 9 May 2026, as printed on the official tickets page. The wrong-fare case covers mix-ups inside one order, for example a reduced ticket put on the name of the paying adult in your group and the full-price one on the teenager. Requests go through the name change form on the ticketing site.
Count the days carefully. For a visit on Saturday 14 November, the window closes at midnight at the end of Saturday 7 November. After that, the name is fixed.
Before May you could edit a name yourself online. RomaToday reported that the Park now wants a request, with illness or bereavement given as examples of the serious reasons. Giving your ticket to a friend because you changed plans is not on the list. Neither is a late booking under a placeholder name.
The evening tours are stricter still: the Night at the Roman Forum page says the name cannot be changed after purchase at all, and a mismatch with your ID means no entry and no refund.

Check dates for the Forum and Palatine tourWhere can you buy Colosseum and Forum tickets in person since May 2026?
The 24h Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket is sold in person only at the Piazza del Colosseo office. The offices at Largo della Salara Vecchia and Foro Romano 1 sell only the Forum Pass SUPER.
The switch came on Monday 4 May 2026. RomaToday explained why: touts outside Colosseo metro sold tourists a fake "skip the line" deal, then walked them to the shorter queue at Largo della Salara Vecchia to buy the real ticket. Putting the Colosseum ticket at one counter makes that harder. The ticket office map on the Park's tickets page now shows the new split.
For a Forum-first visitor this works out fine. The Forum Pass SUPER costs €18, has no time slot, skips the Colosseum and adds the SUPER sites such as the House of Augustus and Santa Maria Antiqua. Bought online it can be used within 30 days; once validated it is good for that day only.
Our take: do not count on a walk-up Colosseum slot on a weekend, even in winter. For the Forum alone on a weekday in November or January, walking up to Salara Vecchia is a reasonable plan. The gates and their queues are compared in our Roman Forum entrances guide.
Why were tour operators suspended in 2026?
RomaToday reported on 3 May 2026 that the Park would suspend the accreditation of 30 operators who bought public tickets in bulk under fake names, and that fines would follow.
Operators are meant to buy on the Park's B2B channel. These ones bought on the public channel instead, the same one you use, and filled in invented holders to get around the named-ticket rule. RomaToday listed some of the names used: the Italian comedian Pippo Franco, Dua Lipa and characters from Friends. The Park traced the buyers through their IP addresses and said it would suspend their B2B accreditation, with fines to be set later.
It is not the first crackdown. In April 2025 Italy's competition authority, the AGCM, fined CoopCulture, the ticketing concessionaire, and six resellers about €20 million in total over tickets hoarded with bots.
Two practical lessons. Official slots vanishing within hours of release is partly this hoarding, so book on the day sales open if your date matters. And never buy a paper ticket from someone outside the metro: a ticket in another person's name gets you turned away at the gate.

Crown Tours asks for every guest's legal full name and date of birth at checkout, then holds the tickets: an hour in the Colosseum, about 45 minutes each in the Forum and on the Palatine.

You give every traveller's full name at checkout, and that name has to match the ID you bring. Most operators do not allow name changes once the booking is confirmed.
The operator buys named tickets for your group, so it needs the names before it buys. City Wonders, which runs the most reviewed Colosseum, Forum and Palatine tour, is blunt about it: "Name changes are not permitted once the booking is confirmed." It also warns that each guest must show a government ID or passport matching the reservation "or entry will be refused".
Crown Tours asks for legal full names and dates of birth. Via Labicana 96 and the private tour ask for every traveller's full name. City Walkers, who run the Forum and Palatine tour, ask you to bring a valid ID to the meeting point.
What you can do is cancel. If a name is wrong or someone drops out, cancel inside the free window and rebook with the right details, as long as your date still has space. That window is 3 days on the City Wonders, Crown Tours and City Walkers tours, 7 days on the Via Labicana 96 tickets and 24 hours on the private tour.
| Tour | What they ask for | Free cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| Forum and Palatine (City Walkers) | Valid ID at the meeting point | Up to 3 days before |
| Crown Tours combo | Legal full name and date of birth for each guest | Up to 3 days before |
| City Wonders combo | All names at booking, ID must match, no name changes | Up to 3 days before |
| Guide-or-app tickets | Full names, passport or ID matching the booking | Up to 7 days before |
| Private tour | Full names on the voucher, matching photo ID | Up to 24 hours before |
How far ahead should you book Roman Forum tickets in 2026?
Official tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit. Book on the first day for weekends, holidays and early Colosseum slots; for the Forum alone in winter, a few days ahead is usually enough.
The 30-day window and the €2 online fee are on the official tickets page. The Colosseum slot is the bottleneck, not the Forum. If you only want the Forum and Palatine, the Forum Pass SUPER has no time slot; only the SUPER sites inside it have capacity limits.
The free first Sundays work differently. There is nothing to book: tickets are handed out in order of arrival at the Piazza del Colosseo office, and the Forum Pass SUPER is not valid that day. Our advice is to skip them and pay the €18.
Booking help: the official helpdesk at [email protected] answers in 48 to 72 hours, and same-day problems go to the call centre on +39 06 21115843. If you want the Colosseum and the Forum on the same day, our one-day plan shows the order that works.

Can I use someone else's Colosseum or Roman Forum ticket?
No. Tickets carry the holder's name and must match the ID you show at the gate. A name change is allowed only for a typo, a wrong fare in the same order or a serious documented reason, by midnight seven days before.
What if my name is misspelled on my Colosseum ticket?
An obvious typo is one of the accepted reasons. Send the official name change form by midnight on the seventh day before your visit; it can be used only once per ticket.
Can I buy a Roman Forum ticket at the Forum entrance?
Yes, but only the Forum Pass SUPER (€18, no Colosseum) at Largo della Salara Vecchia and Foro Romano 1. Since 4 May 2026 the 24h Colosseum, Forum and Palatine ticket is sold in person only at Piazza del Colosseo.
Is the Roman Forum included in the Colosseum ticket?
Yes. The €18 Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket includes one entry to the Forum and Palatine within 24 hours before or after your Colosseum time slot.
